Rodney Place’s Angels of Stealth: Foreign Affair, a work-in-progress with Leila Anderson, 24th March 2010 / 1st June 2010

Begun in Eastern Europe, Angels of Stealth poses the dilemma of the symbolic and the personal in post-ideological societies, as the young generation, pressured by the weight of the past, try to make their way tentatively into a future.

Foreign Affair, a South African story, is situated at the end of apartheid but also at the end of the Cold War and swings the East-West compass of the project North-South, extrapolating on the question “What does the Cold War, or the end of it, have to do with Africa”. The answer is everything (of course) in many complex ways from history, to politics, to culture, sexuality and feminist positions from East to West and North to South. The work stays in the realm of art and fiction where political and cultural contexts are seen through real characters and specific and engaging narrative and imagery.

Works from Place’s multimedia project, Angels of Stealth have been seen in festivals, museums, galleries and theatres in Poland, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Slovenia and South Africa.
