Frederick Clarke (Inkoom) lives and works as a full time artist and music producer in Johannesburg. He completed his BA Fine Arts at the University of Witwatersrand in 2005. Since then he has organized and taken part in numerous exhibitions and projects. He currentlyworks from his project space and studio called Math Room at Arts on Main in Johannesburg CBD. What started as a flooded bathroom and a ruined pack of toilet rolls evolved into a playful and engaged commentary on vaginas, feminine energy, and the human evolution that we are currently experiencing. It is bizarre that one's initial introduction to violence precedes that of nudity and sex (or at least is socially endorsed), and equally suspect is that the majority of the internet is porn: clearly we are simultaneously obsessed, ashamed, and confused. Humans are a voyeuristic species, eating with both our mouths and eyes. The vagina has to a large degree been buried beneath layers of male-dominated and often misogynistic media. The intention for this body of work is to celebrate, investigate, enjoy and evolve the thoughts and feelings surrounding sexual energy, power, survival, and balance. Our history has revealed the deep flaws of patriarchal society. We are a species out of balance, and an integral part of the shift towards internal and external equilibrium is a much-needed harmony of male and female energies. There is a reason why we refer to "Mother Earth" - because feminine energy is cyclic and malleable, moving with a natural flux that both allows and ultimately destroys constructed rigidity. As a man it is important to assimilate, celebrate and support the mystery and beauty of femininity - as it may well guide our species out of an engrained cycle of trauma and separation. |
