Small Worlds: Rail technology, nostalgia and South African landscape
An exhibition of photographs and video by Christo Doherty
Small Worlds is a visual investigation into the imagined worlds of South African railway modelers. Playing with the viewer’s sense of scale, these large-format photographs are vivid glimpses into the psycho-geography of virtual worlds and the way into which a technologised South African landscape is represented in a particular niche of South African popular culture. This project also examines how these worlds are imaginary representations, often bathed in poisonous nostalgia, of South African rail landscapes, and explores the idea that industrial landscapes have been under-represented in South African landscape art.
